Ipanema Apartments

Ipanema Apartments

Ipanema is the most fashionable district of Rio de Janeiro, located between Leblon and Arpoador beach. It is a residential neighbourhood with a prevalence of upper-middle-class families, and is generally considered the safest area of the souther zone of the city.

The district became famous in the 1960’s thanks to the musical style of bossa nova, and in particular to the song written by Antonio Carlos Jobin and Vinicius de Moraes, called “Garota de Ipanema“. Today is a very popular tourist destination among the lovers of beach holidays. In fact, Ipanema beach, adjacent to Copacabana’s, is a very famous haunt for surfers and people playing football, volleyball and footvolley. Beer and cachaça, a local drink, are sold everywhere along the beach.

Many Ipanema apartments are situated a few steps from the beach and the famous Posto 9. This is a segment of the beach traditionally known for pot smoking (illegal in Brazil), and is considered a left-wing, alternative place.

Ipanema has many restaurants and shops, but also art galleries, theatres and cafes. The most important streets are Avenida Viera Souto, Rua Prudente de Moraes and Rua Visconde de Piraja. On Sundays the Avenida Viera Souto is closed to traffic, the kiosks get crowded by thousands of people and many use the opportunity to ride bikes, roller skate, skateboard, and walk along the ocean. Ipanema also holds its own street parade during Carnival festivities. Banda de Ipanema, declared part of the cultural heritage of Rio de Janeiro in 2004, attracts up to 50,000 people every year with its colorful parade of drag queens in odd costumes and performances.
